Issey Miyake’s first remarkable milestone, and likely the one that marked his career, was the application of a new garment folding technique, currently known as pleating. The pleats are an experiment with its origin in Japanese Origami. The pleats came in vibrant colours and were worn by women all over the world. The designs became more and more popular so Miyake decided to create it into a separate line and called it Pleats Please.
The method resulted in fabrics that are fully creaseless and incredibly lightweight. “It is our job as designers to create clothes from materials in such a way that those who wear them have the freedom of expression and its resulting joy,” Issey Miyake said.
